Taking full advantage of opportunities is often easier said than done, that’s reason why so many people fail at it. Most people dream of being wealthy, but never take action towards achieving those dreams. If you want to take full advantage of opportunities as they arise, then you must start by defeating procrastination!
The Thief of Opportunities
Procrastination and the ‘if only’ syndrome cripples the creative spirit, and is the leading cause of people not realizing their dreams. Socrates, the great philosopher, said “Action equals knowledge’. He was one of the foremost thinkers of his time, and perhaps even ours. Procrastination is the thief of opportunities!
What Socrates meant by this is that through action we achieve results. And through results we acquire knowledge. For instance, you may have thought about starting your own business, imagining what it would be like to be your own boss. You can dream until the clouds fall from the sky, but accomplish nothing unless you put forth the effort to getting started.
Do you want to start your own business but fear all the things that can go wrong? What if you don’t receive a return on your initial investment, for example? There are numerous things that could go wrong, but what about all the things that could go right? Fear can paralyze you from taking action!
Opportunities Don’t Wait
You may be thinking that you’ll start a business when the timing is right. Wrong! There’s never going to be a perfect time. Listen, there are only two times in life: it’s either now or it’s either too late!
Overcoming your fear requires action, systemic action…
- Do you have a crystal clear idea of what business you will start?
- Do you have the necessary resources required to start your business?
- Do you have existing clients, or do you have a strategy in place to acquire them?
I know these may seem like some tough questions, but if you don’t have answers to them, then how are you to succeed? Just like anything else in life – taking action is the most important step. Make a succinct list of what needs to be done in order for you to start your dream business. Then prioritize your list in order of importance.
Don’t wait until every thing is just perfect before you make sure you have the basics covered. Don’t wait for that ‘perfect day’ to come. Make an imperfect start, then take corrective actions as you go. But whatever you do, don’t let procrastination stop you!
